What Should I Do With My Life?

Have you ever asked yourself: “What should I be doing with my life?”
I know I have. I used to think that there might even be a blueprint out there, but I just hadn’t found it yet.
But then I read What Should I Do With My Life? by Po Bronson, and it completely reframed this question for me.
I want to share four lessons that really stuck with me from this book, and how they can be applied to your life. These are lessons about community, change, action, and even some ideas that might surprise you.
📚Why You Should Read This Book
Like many, I was looking for the blueprint of what I should be doing with my life.
Initially, I was disappointed to find that this wasn’t the standard self-help book I had expected, but instead a catalogue of the author’s conversations with people who found, and in some cases didn’t find, what they wanted to be doing with their life.
Thankfully, this became a refreshing assessment of how we can better understand what we want to be doing with our lives.
I would recommend this book for anyone who feels like they haven’t yet found their path in life. Prepare to read different stories of people who have tried to find their own path, and hopefully take away your own view of how this applies to you.
❓Why We Ask This Question
For many of us, we can get extremely focused on whether we are leading the best life possible.
This is completely natural. As brutal as it might sound, all of our lives are finite, so we want to make the most of the time we’ve got.
But this can also lead to an issue of overthinking this question. The first step when we consider the question of what we want to do with our lives should be to consider whether we may already have the life we desire.
If that's not the case, then there are steps you can take.
🪜The Steps to Your Dream Path
From Bronson’s book on this subject, I had four key takeaways that have helped me to find my own path:
- Find your community: Ensuring that we are surrounded by people who push us to grow and develop. We should be able to receive their feedback and, in turn, help them in their journey.
- Embrace change: Understand that change is constant, and the key point is to remain flexible. The road may change, but your end destination should be the focus that keeps you steady.
- Align your path with your values: The key to ensuring you feel satisfied is aligning your belief system with your life. If there isn’t a match, then it may be time for a change.
- Actions over epiphanies: Don’t wait for a miracle moment of enlightenment to guide you. Instead, take action, beginning with small experiments on areas that may interest you.
💭Closing Thoughts
The question of what you should do with your life is not a one-stop answer. Instead, it is a constant process that we are bound to ask ourselves.
I have found that by following the four steps to my dream path, I feel both present and excited for the future.
If you are interested in exploring your path for the future, or you’ve used similar strategies in your life, I’d love to hear from you. So please drop me a message.
