AI for Productivity: Practical Ways to Get More Done
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the current buzzword.
Discussions and articles about AI seem to be multiplying by the day.
At first, AI felt like a gimmick to me, but now it’s an essential part of my daily workflow. Today I am going to provide an insight into AI and how I use it to boost my productivity.
A Brief History of AI
AI as a field took off in 1956 at the Dartmouth Conference, where researchers aimed to create machines with human-like intelligence. While progress was slow in the early years, recent breakthroughs in deep learning and large language models (like OpenAI’s ChatGPT) have accelerated AI’s influence in our daily lives.
Benefits of Using AI
When it comes to improving our productivity, AI has been beneficial to me in the following ways:
- Inspiration: When I am struggling to come up with creative ideas, I ask AI for their thoughts. Use AI tools like ChatGPT or image generators to spark creative ideas for writing, brainstorming, or content creation. If you’re stuck, ask AI for alternative perspectives, outlines, or prompts to help overcome creative blocks.
- Proofreading: Leverage AI-powered grammar and style checkers like Grammarly or Hemingway to refine your writing. AI can help catch typos, suggest clearer phrasing, and ensure your message is polished and professional.
- Smart Scheduling: Use AI-driven scheduling tools like Motion or Reclaim.ai to automate calendar management, find optimal meeting times, and protect deep work sessions. These tools analyse your availability and suggest the best time slots based on priorities.
- Decision-Making Support: AI can summarise complex information, analyse data trends, and provide insights to help you make informed choices. Whether you’re comparing options for a project or evaluating business strategies, AI can process large amounts of data quickly to highlight key takeaways.
Challenges of Using AI
- Over-Reliance: Whilst AI can be a wonderful tool, there is a danger that we can become too reliant on using AI and lose skills that we once had. To prevent this, we need to keep a clear vision of what tasks we are happy for AI to manage and keep those that you want to maintain personally.
- Inaccurate or Biased Outputs: Current AI is at risk of providing incorrect information, or outputs that are swayed by an opinion. This is clearly communicated by most well-known AI systems, so for important information it is important to double check the sources.
- Loss of Personal Touch: Even the best chatbots and AI can sometimes write in a style that may not reflect your tone or voice. No doubt, as AI evolves, this will become less of an issue, however when you find AI isn’t capturing your voice then ensure you maintain the personal touches that make you who you are.
Work Smart with AI
The growth of AI is set to shape the course of the 21st century in unprecedented ways. There are no doubt challenges and questions to be answered, however there are already clear benefits coming through that you can benefit from today.
